Forum on Health and Nutrition
About the Forum
Founded in 2006 under the African Science Academy Development Initiative (ASADI), the UNAS Forum on Health and Nutrition provides a structured opportunity for stakeholder discussion and scrutiny of critical and possibly contentious scientific and policy issues of shared concern related to issues of health and nutrition in Uganda and throughout the world.
The Forum aims to:
- Promote a regular and ongoing exchange of information and ideas about critical issues among policymakers, public and private sector leaders, individuals, and groups who shape and influence public policy and opinion;
- Clarify policy and research issues and identify options that require additional emphasis and research, and encourage further exploration in these areas;
- Iinform public and private sector decision- and policymakers on a number of issues related to health and nutrition in Uganda and worldwide, and;
- Formulate priority and collaborative initiatives that require in-depth exploration, review, and/or analysis of existing data and research, particularly in instances where new strategies are necessary to advance progress in health and nutrition.
The role of Forum members is to:
- Attend the open session of Consensus Study meetings and ask pertinent questions that get at important issues related to the committee charge;
- Suggest potential study topics;
- Assist UNAS staff in identifying potential sponsors of consensus studies and other Forum activities; and
- Propose names of subject matter experts who will form the Consensus Study Committee responsible for responding to the committee charge and developing conclusions and recommendations.
Forum members come together at least twice a year to participate in activities that are run jointly with the open session of the Consensus Study Committee meeting. Because members of the Forum are not involved with crafting conclusions and recommendations – the responsibility of the Consensus Study Committee.
Forum members are required to undergo an intense bias and conflict of interest discussion that is required for all the subject matter experts chosen to sit on the Consensus Study Committee.
